Sidechains are independent blockchains connected to a parent blockchain (often called the main chain). They operate independently, but are connected through a mechanism that allows the exchange of assets between the two chains. This connection is usually accomplished using bi-directional pinning.


Technical Mechanisms


Sidechains function by allowing users to transfer assets from the main chain to the sidechain and vice versa. This is accomplished through a locking and unlocking mechanism in which assets on the main chain are locked and a corresponding number of assets are released on the side chain.

2. Unlocking phase: corresponding to the locked assets, equivalent assets are "unlocked" or made available on the sidechain. This ensures that the total supply of assets remains constant, thus maintaining the integrity of both networks.


Assets on a sidechain are essentially a representation of locked assets on the main chain. This representation allows for free movement and use within the sidechain ecosystem according to its specific rules and protocols.


Extended functionality


In addition to basic asset transfers, sidechains can introduce various features and enhancements not available on the main chain. This may include advanced smart contract functionality, different consensus mechanisms or optimized scalability solutions.
