1. Introduction

In 2014, the collapse of the world's largest Bitcoin trading platform, Mt. Gox, resulted in the loss of approximately 650,000 Bitcoins, causing a significant shock in the cryptocurrency field. This article aims to comprehensively analyze the causes, processes, and impacts of the Mt. Gox incident, and to explore the recently initiated repayment plan and its profound impact on the market.

2. The Rise and Fall of Mt. Gox

Mt. Gox (Magic: The Gathering Online eXchange) was founded by Jed McCaleb in 2007, originally as a platform for trading Magic: The Gathering cards. In 2009, McCaleb discovered the potential of Bitcoin and converted the platform into a Bitcoin exchange. In 2011, McCaleb sold Mt. Gox to Mark Karpeles. By then, Mt. Gox had become the world's largest Bitcoin trading platform, handling over 80% of global Bitcoin transactions between 2011 and 2013.

After becoming a Bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox grew rapidly, but its security and management issues gradually emerged. Early security vulnerabilities and technical problems, including user password leaks and system loopholes, led to multiple hacking attacks and fund losses. These issues laid the groundwork for a larger-scale hacking attack later.

2011 First Hacking Incident

In June 2011, Mt. Gox experienced its first major hacking incident, resulting in the theft of 2,000 Bitcoins. Security vulnerabilities at the time included user password leaks and system loopholes, allowing hackers to manipulate accounts for illegal transactions. Although the platform carried out repairs and compensation afterward, this incident revealed the tip of the iceberg of the platform's security issues.

2014 Large-Scale Bitcoin Theft

In February 2014, Mt. Gox announced the suspension of all withdrawals, citing transaction malleability issues in the Bitcoin protocol, leading to the repeated trading of Bitcoins. Subsequently, the platform completely ceased trading on February 24 and filed for bankruptcy protection with the Tokyo District Court on February 28, reporting a loss of approximately 850,000 Bitcoins valued at about $450 million. This incident marked the complete collapse of Mt. Gox.

In March 2014, Mt. Gox announced the recovery of approximately 200,000 Bitcoins, previously stored in an old digital wallet. This reduced the total lost Bitcoins from 850,000 to 650,000.

Bankruptcy Filing and Legal Proceedings

After the collapse of Mt. Gox, affected users and investors initiated legal proceedings seeking compensation for their losses. In August 2015, Mark Karpeles was arrested in Japan, facing charges of data manipulation and embezzlement. In 2019, the Tokyo District Court found Karpeles guilty of data manipulation but acquitted him of embezzlement charges, sentencing him to two and a half years in prison, suspended for four years. Japanese police and the Financial Services Agency conducted detailed investigations into the Mt. Gox incident, attempting to ascertain the specific causes of the Bitcoin loss and the responsible parties. These investigations revealed serious negligence by the platform's management in handling user funds and security issues.

Attempts to Restart and Compensation

Following the collapse of Mt. Gox, some investors and industry participants attempted to rebuild or restart the Mt. Gox trading platform, but these attempts mostly failed due to legal and compensation issues. Some reconstruction plans stalled due to the inability to secure necessary funding and legal permissions.

In 2018, a Japanese court approved a civil rehabilitation process, allowing Mt. Gox creditors to receive partial compensation in the form of Bitcoin and cash. However, due to the complexity of bankruptcy procedures and legal proceedings, the compensation process was extremely slow. By the early 2020s, although some creditors had received compensation, overall progress remained sluggish.

In December 2023, several Japanese users reported on social media that they had received compensation in yen via PayPal, including Yuzo Kano, founder of Japan's leading exchange bitFlyer. This compensation came from the 7 billion yen redeemed from the bankruptcy trust by Nobuaki Kobayashi on November 17, 2023.

3. Recent Developments: Mt. Gox Initiates BTC Repayment Causing Market Panic

On May 28, Mt. Gox cumulatively transferred over 107,000 BTC through cold wallets, valued at approximately $7.2 billion, sparking speculation about subsequent actions by Mt. Gox. The BTC price fell from a high of $70,000 and began a continuous fluctuation and correction.

On June 24, 2024, ten and a half years after filing for bankruptcy, Mt. Gox's bankruptcy trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi announced that Mt. Gox trustees would begin BTC and BCH repayments starting in early July. This is the first time Mt. Gox will repay in BTC and BCH, meaning the 140,000 BTC (and an equivalent number of BCH) held by Mt. Gox will start flowing into the market. This repayment plan marks the beginning of the realization of compensation that creditors have waited nearly ten years for. It is expected to repay about 142,000 BTC and 143,000 BCH, with a total value exceeding $8 billion.

On July 5, 2024, Mt. Gox bankruptcy liquidator Nobuaki Kobayashi announced that Mt. Gox had compensated some creditors with BTC and BCH through specified cryptocurrency exchanges according to the bankruptcy reorganization plan. Once the following conditions are met, Mt. Gox will immediately compensate other creditors: (i) verifying the validity of registered accounts and other matters; (ii) the designated cryptocurrency exchange accepting the agency collection agreement; (iii) discussions between the bankruptcy liquidator and the designated cryptocurrency exchange on compensation matters are completed; (iv) confirmation that compensation can be safely carried out.

Subsequently, the Mt. Gox wallet transferred a total of 47,229 BTC. Of these, 2,701.8 BTC were transferred out of the Mt. Gox wallet: 1,544.7 BTC were sent to Bitbank via Mt. Gox address 1PKGG; 1,157.1 BTC were sent to an unknown counterparty bc1qkjc, possibly a designated repayment exchange platform; Mt. Gox address 16ArP continued to hold 44,527 BTC; including BTC transferred to 16ArP, the Mt. Gox wallet still held a total of 138,985 BTC (approximately $8 billion). As a result, the BTC price fell below $54,000.

The time creditors receive BTC or BCH will vary depending on the specified exchange: Kraken may take up to 90 days; Bitstamp may take 60 days; BitGo 20 days; SBI VC Trade and Bitbank will complete the compensation within 14 days.

Mt. Gox will calculate each creditor's debt share based on the yen price of BTC at the time of bankruptcy (currently equivalent to approximately $314), which only applies to creditors who chose to receive repayment in "physical" form, as some creditors have opted to accept fiat currency repayment. The BTC will then be distributed to different creditors based on their share. Since Mt. Gox lost about 650,000 BTC and still holds 140,000 BTC, the BTC base recovery rate is approximately 21.5%. If an account held 100 BTC at the time, only about 21.5 BTC can be recovered now. Considering the nearly hundredfold increase in BTC value, creditors still profit handsomely.

4. Market Pressure Assessment

Short-term Market Reaction

After Mt. Gox announced the start of BTC and BCH repayment, Bitcoin prices fluctuated and experienced panic selling following the announcement. In the short-term market reaction, investor sentiment was volatile, and some holders might choose to sell to avoid potential market risks. However, the actual impact of such panic selling may be overestimated. From May 28 to July 5, Bitcoin fell from a high of $70,000, dropping to below $54,000 at its lowest, with a cumulative decline of 22%.

Mid-to-Long-term Market Absorption Capacity

In the mid-to-long term, the market's ability to gradually absorb the pressure will mitigate the negative impact of short-term selling. The number of coins sold by exchanges is much smaller than the total holdings. Galaxy Research Director Alex predicts that approximately 20,000 BTC claims have been acquired by the bankruptcy fund, and an additional 10,000 claims belong to the Bitcoinica BK exchange. According to Mt. Gox's 2023 data report, many original creditors have sold their claims due to the long compensation period. These claims are mainly held by institutional entities, with 226 creditors owning more than 50% of Mt. Gox's claims. These institutions generally have stronger financial capabilities and market response abilities, more likely to accumulate positions at a discount rather than quickly selling off for arbitrage.

BCH Volatility Will Increase

In contrast, BCH has poorer market liquidity, and creditors' faith in BCH is clearly lower than in BTC. It is expected that BCH's market performance will be relatively poor after Mt. Gox's repayment. Creditors may choose to quickly sell BCH to acquire more liquid BTC or other assets, further exacerbating BCH market volatility.

5. External Factors and Comprehensive Impact

German Government Announces BTC Sale

External factors, including the German government's BTC sale, also affect the market. The German government recently announced plans to sell some of its held Bitcoins to generate fiscal revenue, further exacerbating market panic.

Federal Reserve Policy and US Elections

The Federal Reserve's monetary policy and the uncertainty of the US elections are also important factors affecting the market. The Federal Reserve's interest rate hike policy may lead to tightened market liquidity, reducing investor preference for high-risk assets. The uncertainty of the US elections adds to market instability, and investors tend to reduce risk exposure in the face of uncertainty.

6. Subsequent Market Trend Judgment

Market Recovery and Adjustment

After experiencing short-term fluctuations, the market is expected to enter a recovery and adjustment period. The stability of institutional holdings and the market's ability to absorb pressure will stabilize market prices in the mid-to-long term. As the main cryptocurrency, Bitcoin's market foundation and investor confidence will gradually recover, and prices are expected to stabilize amid fluctuations.

In the long run, the repayment plan of the Mt. Gox incident will help resolve historical issues, enhance market transparency and confidence. The recovery of investor confidence is crucial for the long-term healthy development of the market. As the market matures and the regulatory environment improves, investors will focus more on long-term value investment rather than short-term speculation.

Future Market Outlook

Although the market fluctuations and pressure caused by Mt. Gox's BTC repayment plan have a certain impact on the market in the short term, the market has sufficient absorption capacity and adjustment mechanisms to cope with these pressures in the mid-to-long term. With the gradual recovery of investor confidence and market maturity, the future cryptocurrency market is expected to enter a more stable and healthy development stage.
