What is Bifurcation?


When blockchain arrives at a crossroads of technological evolution or governance values, a fork becomes a defining moment of destiny. It is not only an either/or choice of code logic, but also an intense clash of values and visions. Forking in the blockchain context refers to changing the structure of the network. Blockchain development teams enhance the network by implementing forks, similar to how updates improve internet protocols and web browsers. The two main types of cryptocurrency forks are soft and hard forks.




Soft Forks


Soft forks in the blockchain do not create new chains by splitting existing chains. Instead, they modify the current network, for example by introducing new features. This soft fork somewhat postponed the scalability issues faced by Bitcoin by allowing the number of transactions housed in a single block to increase from an average of about 1,000 to about 2,000, reducing the amount of data taken up by each transaction and alleviating network congestion to some extent.



Hard Forks


On the other hand, the hard fork left an indelible impact on the existing blockchain network. The fork split the blockchain into two separate chains, creating new local cryptocurrencies on the new branch. The programming changes in the hard fork were more dramatic than those in the soft fork.



Although the source code for both blockchains originates from the same base, they are not interoperable. The original blockchain stays the same, while the newly formed blockchain operates under a new set of protocols and pursues a different path.



Take the 2017 fork of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, for example. This divergence centered on the size of the Bitcoin block. Prior to the hard fork, the Bitcoin network averaged about 250,000 transactions per day, but was limited by a 1MB block size, which led to slow transactions and high fees. The Bitcoin Cash branch opted to increase the block size to 8MB (with further expansion to follow), aiming to increase processing power and reduce transaction fees, which in turn improved the user experience. This fork allows coin holders to have equal amounts of old and new tokens on both chains. The price of Bitcoin Cash has fluctuated dramatically since the fork, rising from a few hundred dollars to a high of over $4,000 in the first few months.




Blockchain forks are irreversible moments in history in the cryptocurrency world. These events, presented to us through actual data-the technological evolvability of a soft fork versus the profound impact of a hard fork. At the time of the fork, we don't just witness a watershed moment in the history of digital currencies, but also feel the pulse of technology, economy and community culture. For example, according to CoinMarketCap, the fork of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash signaled a recapitalization of the market, with the emergence of Bitcoin Cash as one of the top-ranking cryptocurrencies in terms of market capitalization immediately.
