A Delta Neutral Strategy is an investment approach aimed at mitigating the impact of underlying asset price fluctuations by simultaneously holding equal amounts of long and short positions, thereby keeping the portfolio's Delta value close to zero. Under this strategy, the investor's profits primarily derive from changes in volatility, time decay (Theta), or other factors, rather than from the price movements of the underlying asset.

Ethena, a crypto financial service provider, employs the Delta Neutral Strategy to generate profits with its synthetic stablecoin, USDe. The operational mechanism of Ethena is as follows:

  1. Collateralized Assets
Users deposit ETH or other crypto assets as collateral to mint USDe stablecoins.

  2. Establishing Delta Neutral Positions
Ethena holds long positions in the spot market while simultaneously taking equivalent short positions in the perpetual futures market. This arrangement brings the overall portfolio's Delta value close to zero, minimizing the net impact of underlying asset price fluctuations on the portfolio value.

  3. Revenue Sources:

    • Funding Rate: In the perpetual futures market, funding rates are periodically exchanged between long and short positions. When the funding rate is positive, long positions pay fees to short positions; when negative, short positions pay fees to long positions. By holding short positions, Ethena earns revenue when the funding rate is positive.

    • Staking Rewards: For the collateralized ETH, Ethena can convert it into stETH (staked Ethereum) to earn staking rewards from the Ethereum network.

  4. Profit Distribution
Ethena offers a yield-bearing tokencalled sUSDe to its users. By staking USDe, users can earn sUSDe, which allows them to benefit from the above-mentioned revenue sources, including funding rate profits and staking rewards.

Through this mechanism, Ethena leverages the Delta Neutral Strategy to hedge against market price risks while earning stable returns from funding rates and staking rewards, providing users with a compelling and risk-managed yield opportunity.
