The control layer consists of the Babylon blockchain network, acting as an intermediary between the Bitcoin network and the Cosmos Hub. In this layer, the Babylon protocol operates a marketplace that matches Bitcoin staking rights with PoS chains. The key technologies in the control layer are the EOTS and Finality Gadget consensus systems, which are used to punish malicious signers and ensure network security. Additionally, the control layer supports fast redemption services, enhancing BTC's liquidity and giving Babylon a significant competitive advantage in the liquid staking market.

Extractable One-Time Signature (EOTS) is a security mechanism primarily used to prevent double-spending. In the Babylon system, if a staker uses the same private key to sign two different blocks at the same height, the private key will be exposed, resulting in the confiscation of the staker's Bitcoin (BTC) assets. The EOTS signature is based on Bitcoin's Schnorr signature technology, and a block is only finally confirmed when more than two-thirds of BTC stakers use EOTS signatures on it. This mechanism ensures that stakers participate in governance according to regulations and prevents malicious behavior.

The data layer mainly includes various PoS consumer chains, which obtain Bitcoin's economic security support through the Babylon protocol. In contrast, Eigenlayer packages the validation service capabilities of Ethereum validators into a commodity, exporting these services to other PoS chains and amplifying the yield capabilities of native Ethereum nodes through the revenue of these chains. Hence, Babylon focuses more on Bitcoin as a native asset, while Eigenlayer emphasizes amplifying Ethereum's validation service capabilities.

Security Needs and Market Response: The security services provided by Babylon are more rigid for other PoS chains. If these PoS chains do not connect to Babylon, they may face criticism for centralization in their custodial methods, affecting their network credibility. While Eigenlayer also provides security consensus services, it is more focused on attracting users by amplifying the existing staking yields of Ethereum. Therefore, Eigenlayer's market performance depends more on the short-term prosperity of the Restaking platform, while Babylon has a more stable market outlook in the long run due to the rigid demand for its solution.


3.3 Babylon Mainnet Launch and First-Stage Staking

On August 22, 2024, Babylon officially launched the first-stage staking activity on its mainnet. The initial staking cap for the first stage was set at 1,000 BTC, with a minimum staking amount of 0.005 BTC and a maximum staking amount of 0.05 BTC per transaction. The staking cap of 1,000 BTC was reached within just 7 Bitcoin blocks, approximately 3 hours, with about 12,700 users participating. Due to fierce competition, the Gas fees on the Bitcoin network soared, with transaction fees reaching a high of over 1,000 satoshis per byte.

Before Babylon officially announced the launch of its mainnet, various LRT projects or platforms in the industry, including Bedrock, Lombard, Lorenzo, Chakra, and pSTAKE, had announced various staking activities. To attract users, these platforms offered Gas fee waivers or direct Gas fee exemptions. As long as users staked BTC through their portals, they would receive rewards from Babylon and corresponding token or point rewards.



4. Analysis of Representative Projects in the Babylon Ecosystem's Liquid Staking Protocols


Under the framework of the Babylon protocol, several liquid staking protocols have emerged. These protocols enrich the use cases of Bitcoin and also provide users with diverse sources of income. Below are five representative liquid staking protocols within the Babylon ecosystem.


4.1 Bedrock (uniBTC)

Bedrock is a multi-asset liquid staking protocol founded by PoS node service provider Rock X. Since its launch in May 2024, Bedrock has become a core project in the Babylon ecosystem due to its innovative staking model and strong technical support. Investors include OKX Ventures, LongHash Ventures, Comma3 Ventures, and Babylon co-founder Fisher Yu. Bedrock supports liquid staking for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other blockchain assets, providing liquid staking tokens such as uniETH, uniIOTX, and uniBTC.

Users can choose to stake WBTC or FBTC on the Ethereum network, and a third party will stake an equivalent amount of Bitcoin into the Babylon protocol. This model ensures Bitcoin's liquidity while allowing users to obtain uniBTC by staking WBTC, enabling them to enjoy the returns from Babylon staking along with other DeFi yields provided by uniBTC.

Bedrock performed exceptionally well in the first stage of Babylon's mainnet staking, becoming the largest delegator with 297.8 BTC staked, accounting for 29.78% of the total.


4.2 Solv Protocol (solvBTC.BBN)

Solv Protocol, through its liquid staking token solvBTC.BBN, allows users to participate in Babylon's staking activities across multiple blockchain networks and earn corresponding returns. A notable feature of Solv Protocol is its multi-chain integration capability. Users can stake Bitcoin assets into Babylon via Solv Protocol and receive solvBTC.BBN, which can circulate across networks such as Ethereum, BSC, Arbitrum, and Merlin.

Solv Protocol raised over $11 million in total funding, with prominent investors including IOSG Ventures, Binance Labs, and Blockchain Capital. In the first stage of Babylon's mainnet staking, Solv Protocol successfully staked 250 BTC, accounting for 25% of the total.


4.3 Lorenzo Protocol (stBTC)

Lorenzo Protocol is a protocol in the Babylon ecosystem that focuses on Bitcoin's liquidity financial layer. The project separates the principal and yield of staked Bitcoin, creating a flexible staking model where users can obtain a Liquid Principal Token (LPT) and a Yield Accruing Token (YAT) through the Lorenzo platform.

Lorenzo's staking model works by staking Bitcoin or BTCB on the Lorenzo platform, with users receiving stBTC at a 1:1 ratio. The staking yield is accumulated in the form of YAT tokens, which users can redeem separately from the principal and yield after the staking period ends. This design allows users to benefit from Babylon's staking returns and trade these tokens in secondary markets for additional profit opportunities.

Lorenzo Protocol completed a round of financing on October 4, 2022, with Binance Labs participating, though the specific amount was not disclosed. Lorenzo performed well in the first stage of Babylon's mainnet staking, staking 129.36 BTC, accounting for 12.94% of the total.


4.4 PumpBTC (pumpBTC)

PumpBTC allows users to stake various forms of Bitcoin assets (e.g., WBTC, BTCB, and FBTC) on its platform and mint pumpBTC at a 1:1 ratio. PumpBTC collaborates with third-party custodians Cobo and Coincover to delegate the staked Bitcoin to the Babylon protocol, with the returns settled in pumpBTC.

To incentivize users, PumpBTC has also launched a points reward mechanism. Users can earn pumpBTC through staking and receive additional points rewards by participating in various activities and team modes on the platform.

PumpBTC accounted for 118.4288 BTC in the first stage of Babylon's mainnet staking, representing about 11.8% of the total staked Bitcoin.


4.5 Lombard (LBTC)

Lombard, established in April 2024, offers cross-chain liquid staking for Bitcoin based on the Babylon protocol. The core product of the Lombard protocol is LBTC, a liquid Bitcoin token minted at a 1:1 ratio on the Ethereum chain. Lombard's investors include Polychain Capital and Babylon Chain.

Lombard's operation mechanism is straightforward. Users deposit Bitcoin into the Lombard platform, which is staked into the Babylon protocol to generate staking returns. Meanwhile, the LBTC tokens minted on the Ethereum chain can freely participate in various DeFi activities. LBTC holders can enjoy the staking returns from Babylon and earn additional yields through DeFi protocols.

Through a security alliance mechanism and the non-custodial key management platform CubeSigner, Lombard ensures the security of users' Bitcoin assets. This security guarantee has earned Lombard a high level of trust in the market. However, due to fierce competition on the day of Babylon's staking launch, Lombard decided to temporarily hold off on staking BTC into Babylon and instead, invest the saved fees into ecosystem development.


4.6 SatLayer

SatLayer focuses on liquidity re-staking and does not directly deposit Bitcoin into Babylon. Instead, it offers users more yield opportunities through re-staking. SatLayer allows users to re-stake Bitcoin and various Bitcoin liquid staking tokens (such as Lombard's LBTC, PumpBTC, SolvBTC, etc.) to earn additional returns. SatLayer provides users with a tool to use Bitcoin as a universal security layer, protecting various decentralized applications or protocols through Bitcoin Validated Service (BVS).

SatLayer completed an $8 million Pre-seed round of financing in August 2024, led by Hack VC and Castle Island Ventures, with participation from OKX Ventures, Mirana Ventures, Amber Group, and other prominent investors. SatLayer launched its first-season deposit activity on August 23, 2024, quickly surpassing the 100 BTC cap and ultimately reaching 133.35 BTC in staking, of which 74.4% was uniBTC, 12% was solvBTC.BBN, and 11.8% was LBTC.



5. Analysis of Risks and Opportunities in Babylon's Liquid Staking Protocol
