The Nasdaq fell 1.25%, the Dow edged up 0.10%, and the VIX rose to 15.41. U.S. stocks did not move uniformly in either direction. Today’s focus is whether pressure on technology stocks will spread, and whether consumer confidence and inflation expectations can change the market’s assessment of growth and interest rates.

In the previous trading session, declines in technology stocks weighed on the major indexes, but most S&P 500 constituents rose. Bond yields first climbed and then fell, with notable intraday volatility.
The VIX rose from 15.08 to 15.41, an increase of 0.33 points, and reached an intraday high of 16.46. The closing value was below the intraday high, indicating that the options market’s pricing of future volatility eased somewhat toward the close, but this does not guarantee an imminent rebound in stock prices.
Hotcoin Observation:The direction of weighted indexes may differ from that of most stocks. Tonight, it is important to observe both whether large-cap technology stocks can stabilize and whether gains are broadening across more industries. One should not conclude that the entire market is weakening in sync based solely on the Nasdaq’s decline.

Today’s Market Focus: Watch Concentration, as Well as Rates and Earnings

When a small number of large companies have high index weights, adjustments in their share prices can significantly affect the indexes, even if other stocks remain relatively stable. When observing TradFi assets, index trends, industry changes, and individual product performance need to be considered separately.
Technology companies’ valuations often incorporate high expectations for future profits. If interest rates rise, the discounted value of future cash flows may decline; if corporate earnings and cash flows improve, they may partly offset this pressure. How these two forces change is more important than simply judging whether “technology stocks are rising or falling.”
Likewise, rising oil prices may affect different companies differently. Energy producers and energy users such as transportation and manufacturing companies face different revenue opportunities and cost pressures. Analysis should return to the structure of each company’s business rather than assuming that all assets will respond in the same way.

This edition covers 71 spot trading pairs in enabled status, classified as U.S. stocks, and quoted in USDT. After excluding 7 samples that failed the quote-timeliness check, the selection was made from 64 valid samples. Perpetual contracts and other categories are not covered, so this does not represent the volatility ranking of the entire platform. The table shows the rolling 24-hour performance of platform products, not the closing returns of the underlying stocks on October 8.
Hotcoin observation:These five items reflect relatively large movements among the selected sample and do not mean that all platform assets declined. Going forward, it will be more important to watch whether prices stabilize, whether trading volume persists, and how platform quotes change after the underlying market opens. Because product structures differ, the returns of stocks with the same or similar names or ticker symbols cannot be directly applied to platform products.

Analyst view: Do not mistake concentrated capital flows for broad rotation

Liz Ann Sonders|Chief Investment Strategist at Charles Schwab's Center for Financial Research:In a market commentary released before the market opened on October 8, she noted that the recent imbalance was closer to capital concentrating in a small number of stocks than to a typical rotation into defensive sectors such as utilities and consumer staples.
Our interpretation:This was an assessment of the market structure at that time, not a forecast of today's market action. If a small number of heavyweight stocks pull back while improvement in other sectors persists, the market may see broader participation. If the breadth of gains also contracts, pressure on the indexes may no longer be merely a concentration issue. This needs to be verified through subsequent trading, rather than using a single day's divergence to confirm a trend.

Today's major events calendar: Consumer confidence and inflation expectations are the focus

October 9 is Friday, and U.S. markets will trade normally. As of this edition's snapshot, none of the following items had been released; Beijing Time is 12 hours ahead of ET.
U.S. Eastern Time (ET)
Beijing Time
Event
Key focus
October 9, 10:00
October 9, 22:00
University of Michigan preliminary October consumer survey
Confidence, economic expectations, and short- and long-term inflation expectations
October 9, 12:45
October 10, 00:45
New York Fed Staff Nowcast update
Changes in the model's estimate of economic growth, not official GDP data
October 9, 16:15
October 10, 04:15
Federal Reserve H.15 and H.8 data
Interest rates and commercial bank balance-sheet information, not a new interest-rate decision
The University of Michigan's final September consumer sentiment reading was 48.1, with one-year inflation expectations at 4.6% and long-term inflation expectations at 3.4%. These are reference values from the previous release, not tonight's figures and not the market consensus expectations.
Tonight, it is necessary to watch both whether consumers feel more optimistic about the economy and whether concerns about prices have eased. If confidence improves while inflation expectations decline, the tension between growth and interest-rate pressure may ease. If confidence weakens while inflation expectations rise instead, the market's assessment of demand and costs may become more complicated. These are all scenario analyses; the actual reaction will still depend on how the data compare with expectations.

Hotcoin's focus today: Use three signals to validate the market direction

1. See whether technology stocks can stop falling.Focus on whether improvement in heavyweight stocks is accompanied by sustained trading volume, rather than looking only at a rebound during the first few minutes after the open.
2. Watch the interest-rate reaction after the consumer survey.Confidence and inflation expectations need to be read together, while observing whether bond yields confirm the market’s initial interpretation.
3. See whether the breadth of the advance can widen. If more industries continue to participate, the index may become less dependent on a small number of stocks; if only a few assets rebound, it should still be regarded as a localized change.
